PREFACE.

'T'HIS, the first edition of the Glasgow Academy Roll
A of Service, contains the names of all x\cademicals
who are known to have served in the Great War. It is
necessarily imperfect, as many names must have been
omitted : but now that the book is in the hands of those
interested, a wider co-operation of aid may be looked for,
and it may be hoped that the final edition will be as
complete as such a work can be. Readers are earnestly
requested to note any omissions or mistakes, and to
communicate with Major Couper, O.T.C.. Glasgow
Academy. On his shoulders has fallen the immense
labour of compiling this work, and only those who have
had practical experience know the amount of toil that is
involved in such a task.

Up to 30th September 19 18 there are recorded the
names of 1450 former members of the School who have
been serving in His Majesty's Forces. Of these, 2 have
gained the Victoria Cross (though neither lived to enjoy
that high honour); 13 the D.S.O. ; 68 the Military Cross;
4 a bar to the Military Cross ; 59 have been mentioned
in Dispatches ; 5 have gained the Military Medal ; 2 the
Distinguished Flying Cross ; 2 the Distinguished Service
Cross ; 3 the Distinguished Conduct Medal, while 1 1 have
won other honours, all duly mentioned in the Roll of
Service.

Of those who have served, 281 have fallen on the field
or died on service.
